Park plan for arena site delayed

Feb 10, 2020 | 12:00 PM

The plan to turn the former Civic Arena site into a park, is behind the original schedule.

As part of a process approved last August, city council had wanted to start getting public input by February 2020, but administration has told the elected reps “it has not been able to meet that deadline” in an update to council.

The new timeline is to start engagement and site design this spring, complete the design by this summer, and begin construction in late 2020.

The site on 37 Ave. currently accommodates the Visitor Information Centre, parking facilities, and a sani-dump.

A new extension of 30 Street to connect 37 and 39 Avenues, including an extension of the multi-use path, is planned for the east side of the site.

That will take up about one-third of the land resulting in about two acres for a park.

The 80-year old Civic Arena was torn down in the fall of 2018.
