RCMP Appreciation Day in B.C Feb. 1

RCMP Appreciation Day, which will be held Saturday (Feb. 1), was started by a group of Vernon citizens, as a way of saying thanks to the RCMP for its service.

The day was proclaimed by the B.C. government last year.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police was established on February 1, 1920 when the Royal Northwest Mounted Police, founded in 1873, and the Dominion Police, founded in 1868, were merged.

The RCMP today is made up of almost 30,000 individuals: 18,000 frontline members and 12,000 support personnel.

B.C.’s Royal Canadian Legion will mark the 100th anniversary of the RCMP with a complimentary one-year membership to first-time, current and retired RCMP.

The Legion says for the last 100 years, members of the RCMP have faithfully served in our communities, risking their lives every single day in order to keep our province and territory safe. It is because of sacrifices like these that the Legion continues to exist today.
