Call for moratorium on 5G towers

Jan 27, 2020 | 5:15 AM

New technology in the wireless industry is being met with opposition by a Vernon environmental group.

Sustainable Environment Network Society (SENS) will make a presentation to Vernon council today, calling on the elected reps to put a moratorium on 5G towers until council is sure it poses no environmental harm or health hazards.

SENS says in its documents Brussels and Geneva have banned 5G for health reasons and are calling for an investigation of the safety standards.

The wireless technology will allow for much faster data speeds than the current 4G.

Web sites say 5G operates in a high-frequency band of the wireless spectrum, and because high frequency waves have a harder time traveling over distance and through objects, the 5G network will be built on small cell site technology with antennas as close as 500 feet apart.
