Warmer weather brings new ‘challenges’ for homeless

Jan 20, 2020 | 5:15 AM

The weather has warmed up — but that has created new challenges and risks for homeless residents.

Vernon’s Turning Points Collaborative Society, which operates three shelters in the city, says the melting snow could be just as deadly for the homeless as the recent cold snap was.

“As these temperatures increase, we are going to see a completely new set of challenges because of the wet that is going to result from the snow melting can be just as deadly,” said Josh Winquist, Director of public relations for Turning Points.

Winquist says homeless residents and people “sleeping rough (outside) are in most danger.

“If they get wet with no way of drying, that increases the risk of hypothermia and pneumonia and different infections if they have an injury or laceration.”

Winquist says they will need the community to continue to show compassion and understanding for people experiencing homelessness.

“Even though the weather is warming up, we’re going to see a whole host of new challenges trying to keep people safe, secure and healthy.”
