School officials look to curb vaping rates in schools

Jan 20, 2020 | 5:10 AM

Officials with the Vernon School District are looking to snuff-out escalating vaping use in local schools.

The District’s substance abuse prevention counsellor, Doug Rogers, estimates 30 per cent of Vernon high school students are using e-cigarettes, and over 200 students were suspended for vaping last year.

The District is inviting parents, students and family to a presentation Tuesday night (Jan. 21) at the Vernon Secondary School theatre called Talking to your kids about vaping (e cigarettes).

“It will outline some of the common yet inaccurate and risky misconceptions people have about vaping,” Rogers told Vernon Matters.

Rogers says one of the misconceptions is that vaping is healthier than smoking, which experts say is not the case.

“Dr. Marvin Krank, a UBC Okanagan psychology professor, will present research and evidence showing the inherent dangers of e-cigarette use.”

Rogers says the event will also provide practical advice on how to interact with your kids to help shape healthier beliefs that lead to reduced substance use risks.

Emilia Gazsity, the tobacco enforcement officer/reduction coordinator for the Okanagan, will discuss laws regarding tobacco and vaping products, and Rogers will talk about the policies and practices School District 22 uses to support its students.
