Residents throughout the Okanagan valley may want to armor themselves in extra layers of winter clothing.

This morning (Jan. 11) Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for the North, Central, and South Okanagan.

Temperatures are expected to plummet to values not seen in years according to Environment Canada, as an artic airmass sweeps its way south this weekend.

Robust northerly winds are estimated to bring wind chill values down to a frigid minus 30 to minus 40 through the Central Interior by Sunday morning. The Southwest Interior and the Columbia region can expect wind chills into the minus thirties by Monday morning.

The national weather service predicts the Kootenays will be spared from bitterly cold windchills untill Monday evening.

With the mercury dropping, more snow is also in the forecast. Environment Canada predicts 5 cm to 10 cm of snow on Sunday in the North and Central Okanagan.
