Kitchen fire sparks safety reminder for holiday season

Vernon fire officials are reminding residents not to get distracted while using the stove or oven over the holiday season.

This comes after fire rescue crews attended an apartment kitchen fire in the 3500 block of 27th Avenue Monday.

“Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke in the building and determined it was coming from a first floor unit. No fire alarm was sounding,” a city news release said.

Captain Dean Wakefield said no injuries were reported and no one was displaced due to the incident.

“A small fire was contained to the kitchen of a single apartment unit,” Captain Dean Wakefield said. “A toaster had been left on the stove top, and when the element was turned on, it melted the toaster and caused the fire.”

Wakefield said the incident serves up a reminder for the holiday season, to pay extra attention in the kitchen.

“Don’t get distracted while using the stove or the oven,” Wakefield said. “Never leave the kitchen unattended while cooking and stay focused on the task at hand. If you live in an apartment, also be sure to know how to activate the fire alarm in case of an emergency.”
