Survey suggests homeless population down slightly in Vernon

The latest homeless survey in Vernon had 151 people counted as homeless in the community, down slightly from the 161 a year ago.

The survey was conducted by Turning Points Collaborative and the Social Planning Council last month (Oct. 16), and will be presented to city council on Monday.

The groups were told the main causes of homelessness in Vernon are low income, high rents and lack of available rentals.

“Currently, Vernon is unable to bring everyone inside on a nightly basis,” the report said. “The additional 20 beds with the Temporary Weather Shelter program are needed to keep people warm during the winter. The annual surveys show that approximately 30 per cent of people are new to Vernon each year, however the annual homeless rate does not increase by 30 per cent. Just like any other demographic, people move in and out of the community.”
