RDNO seeking volunteers for waste management working group

Nov 22, 2019 | 10:00 AM

The Regional District of North Okanagan is looking for people to provide input on waste, and how it’s managed in the future.

RDNO is looking for up to 15 community members, business owners or others to apply to be part of a monitoring working group for the regional solid waste management plan.

“Members will represent a balance of community interests and act as advisors to the Board of Directors on the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP),” says Ashley Gregerson. communications officer.

The members will provide input on new and current programs.

“Tasks will include reviewing information related to the implementation of the SWMP, including waste quantities, population, and diversion rates for each plan component; providing input on design and implementation of public surveys and consultation processes for new diversion programs and disposal facilities; assisting in the review of current programs and identifying issues and opportunities,” said Gregerson.

The members chosen for the working group will be appointed for a two-year term expected to begin in March 2020, with their duties to end work when the SWMP is being updated, expected to be in 2023.

“Monitoring the implementation of strategies to maximize the diversion of waste from RDNO landfills is an important part of reaching our new, lower waste disposal target set by the Board of Directors and approved by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy in 2018,” said Kevin Acton, Chair of the RDNO Board of Directors.

Mike Fox, general manager, community services, says more information is available on the Regional District of North Okanagan website at www.rdno.ca.

“We hope to review all applications in January and nominate members in February 2020,” Fox said.
