Horse college supporters seek grants

A group looking to open a horse-related college in the North Okanagan may hold its next meeting in Armstrong.

Malcolm Lynn, president of the Monashee Valley Agri Park Society, says they had just eight people come out to their latest meeting at Squires Four Pub in Vernon last week.

“I was thinking of maybe having it in Armstrong. Perhaps we can get some more people to join,” said Lynn.

Lynn says it looks positive for getting a lease with the Okanagan Indian Band (OKIB) for 25 acres of land in Spallumcheen.

“There was a representative [at the meeting] from OKIB, and they’re very interested in doing something together,” said Lynn.

Lynn says the group now needs money, and is applying for government grants.

“Our grant writer has applied for a provincial grant. None of the politicians showed up [for the meeting]. We are going to request a meeting with (Shuswap MLA) Greg Kyllo so we can get a line on some more provincial government grants. As soon as (MP) Mel Arnold gets sworn in, we can meet with him on federal grants.”

The non-profit group is proposing to offer certified blacksmith and veterinarian-assistant courses at the Monashee Equine College, with the revenue used to create horse-related facilities such as a race track, and a swimming pool for horses.
