Vernon’s most dangerous intersections

Nov 14, 2019 | 3:00 PM

The top five intersections for vehicle crashes in the City of Vernon have been revealed and some may surprise you.

Data was compiled into a report using five years of ICBC collision claims data from 2013 to 2017. The consulting group McElhaney Consulting Services conducted the study and provided some short-term safety recommendations to the city.

1. 48th Ave and 27th Street

At the top of the list is 48th Avenue and 27th Street. According to ICBC data gathered the past five years, 161 collisions took place, a third of which involved injuries. Thirty incidents involved rear-end collisions and half of those incidents cited icy road conditions.

The intersection at 48 Avenue and 27 Street was ranked as the most dangerous intersection (Tiffany Goodwein/ VernonMatters Staff)

No pedestrians were reported injured during the past five years.

The report noted access to the gas station is too close to the intersection which creates turning conflicts for vehicles in addition to other nearby accesses.

Short-term safety recommendations include :

  • Adding a right turn lane sign heading south bound
  • Constructing median islands and a “smart “ right turn island
  • Putting anti-skid treatment on pavement
  • Review signal timing and coordinate signals in the area

2. Anderson Way/ 58th Avenue/ 27th Street

Second on the list is an intersection pretty close in proximity from the most dangerous intersection. Seventy-nine collisions took place and of those almost half resulted in injuries. During the five-year period, the month of December consumed over a quarter of the crashes at 27 per cent.

In the report, a significant trend toward left hand turn collisions was noted northbound, and speed along 27th Street was noted as an issue by those conducting the report.

Short-term safety recommendations include:

  • Signal timing review
  • Anti-skid pavement treatment
  • Installing advanced warning flashers for south bound traffic
  • Rebuilding the northbound right turn island
  • Keep commercial signs out of driver sight lines

3. 48 Avenue and Anderson Way

Third on the list is also in the city’s north end. This intersection, adjacent to the Andre’s Plaza saw 66 collisions and almost half resulted in injuries.

Of the 66 collisions, 30 took place at nearby commercial entrances and 32 per cent of total collisions involved rear end accidents most commonly on east and south bound regions.

Short- Term safety recommendations:

  • Revisit signal timing
  • Realign northbound left-turn lane on Anderson Way
  • Anti-skid pavement treatment

4. 43rd Avenue/20th Street

This Harwood area intersection saw 34 collisions take place and almost half resulted in injuries. Out of the total number of crashes, a third of them involved rear end incidents on 20th Street approaches.

An unusually cold December back in 2017 did not do any favors with 10 collisions taking place that month.

Researchers noted blocked vehicles along 43rd Avenue also impacted driver’s vision and accounted for three crashes.

High speed along 43rd Avenue was also noted by researchers when they visited the area.

During the five year period, one pedestrian and one cyclist were struck while using the crosswalk.

Short-term safety recommendations:

  • Upgrade crosswalk flashers to Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB). The city of Vernon said they will be installing the rectangular flashing beacons
  • Remove advance crosswalk sign
  • Maximize visibility of 20 Street stop signs
  • Ensure intersection sight lines are clear
  • RCMP speed enforcement

5. 43rd Avenue and 29th Street

This intersection near Wise Guys Car Wash saw 41 collisions in the five-year period, with the highest number of crashes in 2017 according to researchers.

According to the report, half of crashes involved right of way conflicts between drivers. Eleven rear-end collisions took place and four crashes involved cars in nearby accesses.

Researchers observed red light running on all lanes except the westbound lane. Red light running was the source of three side impact crashes during the time of the study.

In terms of pedestrian impact, one pedestrian in a mobility scooter was struck.

Short-term safety recommendations

  • Revisit signal timing
  • Install traffic signals west and southbound
  • Restrict access movements near intersection undefined
The intersection along 32 Avenue and 34 Street near Beach Radio was ranked #15 with 22 collisions

Other intersections mentioned in the report include the intersection of 32nd Avenue and 34th Street, 48th Avenue and Silver Star Road and 30th Avenue and 27th Street.
