No comment from council on cidery plan

Coldstream council is not taking a stance on plans by a Lavington business to serve alcohol to customers on an outdoor patio.

The owner of Tony’s Craft Cidery, Tony Nijjar, is seeking a lounge endorsement license from the B.C. Liquor Regulation Branch to serve cider to up to 25 patrons at its site at 6167 Highway 6 in Lavington.

The proposed hours of liquor service are Monday to Thursday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“The Branch’s process requires that applications first be submitted to the local government, wherein the local government (Council) decides whether to gather public input and provide comment or opt-out of gathering input and commenting entirely,” says Michelle Austin, Development Services with the District in a report to council.

Mayor Jim Garlick says council went against a staff recommendation which called for council to gather neighbour input on the application, and to provide a resolution/comment to the Liquor Branch on the proposal.

“The motion was the alternate option two to forgo public input due to the isolated location of proposed,” Garlick told Vernon Matters.

District staff will now notify the Liquor Branch that council will not be providing comment on the application.

The staff report said the owners constructed a 1,600 square foot cidery with a tasting room and outdoor lounge on the property in 2017/18, with plans to open in November 2019.
