Hill would consider another Double Deca: ‘I never say never anymore’

Nov 8, 2019 | 8:28 PM

Shanda Hill has gone from making Canadian history, to taking lots of ice baths.

The Vernon ultra athlete became the first Canadian to complete the Double Deca triathlon in Mexico last week, a race that is the equivalent of 20 Ironmans.

The event features a 76 km swim, a 3,600 km bike ride and an 844 km run.

Hill finished fifth overall among the 14 men and women that started, second among the women, and became just the third female to finish the race.

Her official time was 646 hours, 12 minutes and 20 seconds over 26 days.

Would she consider going into another Double Deca?

Hill spoke to Vernon Matters upon her return to Vernon this week.

“I feel really good. I’ve had a lot of ice baths. I was doing them in the hotel in Mexico and I feel that makes a really big difference. Outside of my shins — because I had shin splints really bad — they’re a little bit soft and inflamed — but it’s something that’s going to go away if I continue the ice baths,” said Hill, a 37-year-old who works for the dried fruit and nut company Rancho Vignola and as a landscaper.

The public is invited to meet Shanda when she is honoured by her work-out spot of choice, The Iron Heart Gym (5400 24 Street) this Sunday at 2 p.m.

“I’m really grateful that they’ve organized that. People can come out, and come and quiz me. I love questions,” said Hill, who thanks the community for all the support they have given her.

“It’s been really incredible. I never thought that people would enjoy ultra triathlon, or even hearing about it as much as I have, so I’m really thrilled that that’s been a focal point.”

Hill says she would consider going into another Double Deca in the future.

“There is a possibility. I never say never anymore”
