Old building to get new use

A new plan for one of Armstrong’s oldest buildings in the downtown, is moving ahead.

City council has approved a development permit for Okanagan Structures to provide commercial and residential space at 2540 Pleasant Valley Boulevard.

“It’s located between the Armstrong Legion and the Bank of Commerce. They’ve been trying to do something with this building for many years, and finally, the owners and our planning staff have come together with a plan that will have some residential on the second story and some commercial on the main floor,” said Mayor Chris Pieper.

The building — which at one time housed the Armstrong Theatre — will be redesigned to have about five small apartments on the top floor and commercial space on the bottom.

“Being an old building, there is lots of challenges ahead with building, zoning and parking, and I think staff and the owner worked really hard to bring a proposal to council that will work, so we’re optimistic it will add to the downtown going forward,” Pieper told Vernon Matters.

The mayor says the building most recently was used for a bulk foods store.
