All the Wild Horses – October 28
Come to the Vernon Towne Cinema on October 28th where you will be able to ride 1000 kilometres, get injured, get lost, experience insignificance in the vast Mongolian steppe without ever leaving your seat, as the Okanagan Screen Arts Society shows “All The Wild Horses.”
This film is based on the original horse messenger system established in 1224 by Genghis Khah. Originally this was a Mongolian derby, an equestrian endurance race covering 1000 kilometres (700 miles) on the Mongolian steppe making it the longest, toughest and most challenging horse race in the world. A bit of history behind the film is that Mongolia is the largest land-locked country in the world.
Under the rule of the Khans in the 13th and 14th centuries, the Mongol Empire was the largest in the world. Mongolians were (and many still are) a nomadic people, and with huge expanses of country to cross, they relied heavily on their animals as transportation.
There are more horses than people in Mongolia and horses have been vital to almost every facet of their life for centuries. There is a saying of “A Mongol without a horse is like a bird without the wings.”
