Final day Oct. 31

Landmark business closing for winter

Oct 3, 2019 | 5:15 PM

A landmark Greater Vernon business has announced a major change to its operations.

Swan Lake Nurseryland — which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year — will be closing for the winter, from Nov. 1 until a date in February still to be determined.

Manager Kirk Hughes says they are returning to their roots as a seasonal business, allowing more focus on the garden centre and local produce.

“We started as a seasonal business; we even started as basically a roadside fruit stand 60 years ago. And over time, we’ve become a full season operation with a lot of diversity of products. And I think what this will do is give us a chance to really focus our attention on the gardening centre side of things, being the local experts in terms of gardening, and carrying the fantastic local produce that we’ve always carried,” Hughes told Vernon Matters.

The bakery, deli and flower shop will continue to be part of the new operating schedule.

Hughes admits sales are slower over the winter, which is another reason for the change.

“Things definitely do slow down in the winter — and being a little far out of town — it’s a little bit more of a journey to get out here. (On) those real winter days when the driving is not the best, it does slow down.”

Oct. 31 will be the final day for 2019.

The change affects about 25 full-time employees who were told about it in August.

“We are a family out here and we’re concerned for our staff as well,” Hughes added.

Mike Kowaluk, who has owned the business for all 60 years, is confident their customers will continue to support them.

“We’ve kind of become a destination point for a lot of people from all over Western Canada. It’s amazing when people say they’re coming to visit somebody and they don’t know how to get to the address, and they say ‘We’ll meet you at the Swan Lake parking lot,” said Kowaluk.
