Watch: Delfing takes heat over climate change comments at SENS all-candidates forum

Oct 1, 2019 | 1:50 PM

PPC candidate Kyle Delfing took some heat over comments made about climate change at an all candidates forum Thursday.

The forum was sponsored by the Sustainable Environment Network Society, an organization that strives to promote environmental awareness in the North Okanagan.

Delfing stated on many occasions that the PPC party does not have specific a climate change strategy, which did not sit well with some members of the audience.

One person even shouted ‘You’re at the wrong forum’ as Delfing attempted to address a question about whether he believes the world is in a climate crisis.

“No, we are not in a climate crisis. Absolutely not. We don’t believe it. There is climate change, but it’s not a crisis,” he said.

Delfing took heat a second time after a young protester from the Vernon Earth Strike movement took to the mic to call him out on a recent tweet where Delfing alluded to climate alarmism as an act of terrorism.

“As a peaceful protester and climate activist do you really consider me a terrorist?” The young protester asked.

Defing told the protester that he doesn’t think the Earth Strike protestors are terrorists but believes they have been terrorized.

“You’re not getting both sides of the story. They’re not teaching it in school, they aren’t giving you options. They aren’t teaching you how to be critical thinkers about the topic. You guys have been around for a few years and that’s fine but the scientists say global warming has been around a lot longer than they are telling you,” he said.

The People’s Party of Canada has made it clear they believe much of the rhetoric around climate change is alarmism and not based on real facts.

“Climate change alarmism is based on flawed models that have consistently failed at correctly predicting the future. None of the cataclysmic predictions that have been made about the climate since the 1970s have come true. No new ice age. No steady warming in direct relation with increases in CO2 levels,” a section on their website reads.

Instead the party believes “there is no compelling reason to jeopardize our prosperity with more government interventions,” and are proposing pulling out of the Paris Accord, eliminating emissions targets and abolishing the carbon tax and other green subsidies.

The next local federal MP forum takes place Tuesday, Oct. 1 at The People’s Place.

Candidates will square off at 6:30 p.m.
