Club ready to welcome newcomers to Vernon

Sep 30, 2019 | 4:54 PM

New residents to Vernon have an organization to help them get to know the area and meet new people.

The Vernon Newcomers Club is based on a similar club in Kelowna, that uses fun activities, special events and guest speakers at its monthly meetings to help new residents integrate into the community.

“We are excited about getting a new club going and providing a range of activities and events that help newcomers become familiar with the area and provide an opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. The (Kelowna Newcomers Club, which has been operating for 50 years) has been very helpful and supportive of our efforts establishing the club,” said one of the locals involved in forming the new club.

While some newcomer clubs cater strictly to women or retirees, the Vernon club will welcome men and women over 19.

Gus Boetzkes, a director of the KNC helping the Vernon club get established, said “A newcomers club is a wonderful way to integrate into a new life and a new community”

Those interested in the Vernon Newcomers Club are invited to its organizational meeting on Oct. 9th at Outboard Waterfront Pub, 7673 Okanagan Landing Road, Vernon.

“The meeting will start at 6:45 p.m. to allow some time to meet and mingle before a presentation on the new club. Those coming to the meeting will be asked if they are interested in becoming a member and the kinds of activities and events they would like the club to organize.”
