Media argues against publication ban in Sagmoen case

Sep 16, 2019 | 2:05 PM

While Curtis Sagmoen’s trial is set to continue at a later date, the judge trying the case will soon determine whether pre-trial testimony will remain banned from publication after hearing legal arguments from lawyers representing the CBC.

In B.C. Supreme Court today in Vernon, lawyers for the CBC and Global argued against the ban on voir dire evidence submitted last week. A voir dire hearing determines admissibility of evidence for trial.

As the current ban remains in place, all submissions made against the ban cannot be published.

Judge Alison Beames has set 10 a.m. Tuesday to possibly render a decision.

The 39-year-old Sagmoen is facing five charges stemming from an incident near Falkland in 2017. The charges include uttering threats with a firearm, disguising his face, discharging a firearm, use of a firearm, and possession of methamphetamine.
