Police search lake for victim of boat crash

RCMP in Salmon Arm are continuing to search for a man who is believed to have drowned following a boat crash on Shuswap Lake Sunday evening.

Search and Rescue from Sicamous, RCMP and BC Ambulance attended to a call of a vessel incident on the Salmon Arm of the Shuswap Lake system between Canoe and Sicamous Sept 1.

Police say two large speed boats had been travelling in tandem on the lake and between 8 p.m. and 8:20 p.m. when there was an incident.

“One of the boats lost control and ejected the two occupants out of the cockpit of the boat and into the lake. A 25-year-old female was pulled from the water by occupants of the other boat. She was believed to have sustained serious injuries at the time and was transported to a larger area hospital for treatment,” said Staff Sgt. Scott West

Search and Rescue and an RCMP boat conducted extensive patrols until 2 a.m. Monday morning.

“Despite search efforts Ryan Hartmann, 33 years-old, remains missing and is presumed drowned,” said West

Police continue to investigate the incident and local Search and Rescue as well as aircraft were searching where the incident occurred Monday afternoon, an area of the lake where its up to 350 feet deep.

The boats involved have been recovered and are in police custody at this time as the investigation into the causal factors leading to this incident continues.
