Car rear-ended, pushed down embankment

Aug 30, 2019 | 1:36 PM

It could have been a whole lot worse.

That’s the comment from BX-Swan Lake Fire Chief Bill Wacey after a vehicle, broken down on the side of Highway 97, was rear-ended by another vehicle going at highway speed Friday morning.

The accident happened on the southbound side of the highway, near Elmwood Road, at the end of the merge lane from Swan Lake Nurseryland.

“Pushed the car probably 25 or 30 feet on the side of the road and then down over an embankment,” Wacey told Vernon Matters.

Fortunately, the driver was outside the car at the time, speaking to someone from BCAA.

“If he had been in there, it would have been a whole lot worse,” Wacey said. “The message is just pay attention when you’re driving.”

Wacey noted there are thousands of extra vehicles on the road today, heading to the IPE in Armstrong, but he said they managed to keep traffic moving, albeit at a slower pace.
