Update: Feral dog gets back home – only to flee again

Aug 28, 2019 | 12:00 PM

Update Aug. 28

The latest update on Kasper the semi-feral dog is that he is once again on the loose in the Vernon area.

The dog’s owner and others were able to get the dog to follow them from Silver Star Road, through East Hill, and to his home Tuesday evening, only to see him get spooked later and jump the six-foot-six-inch high fence in his yard again.

“Our hope is that he will continue to revisit home and that he will regain trust of the house itself. In the meantime, his people will work on more security for the fence like coyote rollers and we hope that does the trick,” said a posting on Facebook by The Crate Escape Dog Adventures.

Anyone spotting Kasper is asked to call or text Katelynn at 250-540-9710.

“The good news is that he feels comfortable and trusting of us. Last night, he followed us from Silver Star Rd all the way home, into his yard! He loved the walk, enjoyed a sprinkler and was having a great time with us. He was genuinely happy. What a success because at least he knows how to get home now!!,” added the posting.

The dog was adopted a couple weeks ago from a rescue in Alberta, but is not used to human touch, and spooks easily.

“Semi-feral means he doesn’t understand that he has a name, he is not comfortable in a house or a car and he will absolutely not allow human contact, you will not catch him.  It also means he lives in survival mode and everyone is a potential danger to him. A glance at him could easily be interpreted and you are hunting him and will cause him to flee,” said Vanessa Robert from Crate Escape on Facebook.

The public is asked to help out as efforts are made to move a semi feral dog from the lower BX and across East Hill, back to his home tonight.

Vanessa Robert from Crate Escape Dog Adventures says people are asked to give them space and avoid them as much as possible so as not to spook the dog.

“We would like for people to do their best to completely ignore us and keep their distance from us because he’s a semi feral dog and every noise and thing he sees gives him a little extra spook,” Robert told Vernon Matters.

The dog named Kasper was adopted a couple weeks ago from a rescue in Alberta, but jumped the fence in this area, and has been on the run since then.

“Myself and his owner have spent the last five days building our trust and relationship with him so he’s now at a point where he has decided he trusts us, but he doesn’t allow human touch, so were hoping to lead him to where we want him to go because we can’t capture him to put a leash on him,” added Robert.
