Residents rally to contain fire

Aug 7, 2019 | 3:00 PM

Residents and first responders teamed-up to prevent a new wildfire from spreading near Enderby.

RCMP said an issue with a B.C. Hydro transformer apparently caused sparks to ignite some grass in the 2600 block of Enderby Mabel Lake Road around 4 p.m. Tuesday.

“Residents in the area jumped into action and were instrumental in preventing the fire from rapidly spreading. Multiple agencies responded, including the B.C. Wildfire Service which was able to contain and fully extinguish the fire,” Const. Kelly Brett said.

“The North Okanagan RCMP want to thank the residents who acted quickly and without hesitation to assist in keeping the fire under control until first responders arrived,” Brett added.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

The fire danger rating is moderate to high in most of the Kamloops Fire Centre, which has officials urging the public to be more careful with fire use.

Over the B.C. Day long weekend, fire wardens discovered and extinguished 32 abandoned campfires, all which could have caused new fires.

According to the the Wildfire Service, it’s crucial for people to remain vigilant with their fire use and other activities in the backcountry during this period of increased fire activity.

Of the five new fire starts in the Kamloops Fire Centre since Friday, only two were caused by lightning.
