Crews jump on new fire near Falkland

A new wildfire that broke out between Falkland and Westwold is now out.

The B.C. Wildfire Service said it was located near Highway 97, 11 kilometres southwest of Falkland in the Ingram Creek area.

“We had four BCWS personnel respond and the local fire department also responded, and it is out,” Taylor MacDonald, information officer with the Wildfire Service, said.

The fire was spot sized.

“I think it was suspected human-caused,” MacDonald added, noting the fire started adjacent to the highway.

Environment Canada meteorologist Matt MacDonald said the smokey haze around the North Okanagan today is coming from fires in the U.S.

“There [are] a few fires burning south of the border in Washington, and we are seeing a bit of a southerly breeze, so that’s carrying a little bit of smoke into the Okanagan,” he told Vernon Matters.
