Could park fatal lead to safety changes?

Jul 29, 2019 | 4:33 PM

It’s too soon to say if a man’s death in Kalamalka Provincial Park will lead to new safety measures for visitors in the popular recreation area.

A 72-year-old Vernon man was hiking in the park Saturday when he fell from a cliff and landed in the water, dying of his injuries.

The incident is under investigation by the B.C. Coroner’s Service.

A spokesperson for B.C. Parks said they need to know more about the incident before they can consider any changes.

“B.C. Parks is currently awaiting information from the RCMP and cannot provide a comment at this time,” a representative from the Ministry of Environment said.

After Saturday’s incident, Vernon RCMP Const. Kelly Brett said there are parts of the trail system in the park that can lead to some steep embankments and cliff edges.

“Therefore we want to remind hikers and visitors to the park to be cautious when hiking in the area,” Brett said.

The victim’s name is not being released for privacy reasons.
