Okanagan Military Tattoo event takes place this weekend

Jul 25, 2019 | 9:00 AM

Get ready for music, dancing, and marching at the sixth annual Okanagan Military Tattoo in Vernon.

The event will feature senior military veterans passing the torch to the younger generation, as part of this year’s theme.

Two youth bands will be on display showcasing their talents, including the world champions from Calgary and 65 members of the Brentwood Imperial Youth Band from the United Kingdom.

Rhythmic gymnasts trained by Olympian Camille Martens of the Okanagan Rhythmic Gymnastics Club will be taking center stage as will performers from the Vernon Cadet Camp’s drill team and brass band.

“We’ve got a bit of everything. Something for everyone and it is just going to be a great show,” organizer Derek Hall said.

An estimated 500 performers will be hitting the stage during the two-day event and for the first time ever the event will be receiving a welcoming from First Nations.

The idea behind the Okanagan Military Tattoo began seven years ago.

“Our founder was at a B.C. Lions game in Vancouver and they had all the pipe bands marching on the field in the half-time show and he thought ‘Well why don’t we do that in Vernon? We’ve got a pipe band there we’ve got the army camp, we’ve got a military history,” Hall said.

Two shows are set to take place at Kal Tire Place this weekend; Saturday July 27 at 7 p.m. and Sunday July 28 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are still available.
