Paddlers raise cash for VJHF

A fun day for dragon boaters on Swan Lake last weekend has paddled in some cash for the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation.

The annual Dragon Boat Festival and Pledge Drive raised $2,020 to support women’s breast cancer treatment.

Twelve teams from the Thompson-Okanagan region hit the lake Saturday for a day full of fun, fundraising, and dragon boating.

It included twelve 500-meter races, a mixed nuts charity challenge, 50/50 draw by the Buoyant Buddies, and the Breast Cancer Survivorship Coronation ceremony.

The Mixed Nuts Charity Challenge was a new addition at this year’s event.

Teams paddled 500 meters, then had to turn their boats around and race back.

Usually, dragon boats do not turn around, so it was an amusing race to watch.

“This challenge is the ultimate in collaboration at the end of a fabulous festival,” Rachael Zubick with the Vernon Dragon Riders team said.

“The partnership between our dragon boat festival and the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation gives our club an opportunity to assist in purchasing critical breast cancer diagnostic equipment,” Festival Manager Lisa George of the Vernon Rowing and Dragon Boat Club said.

Since its inception in 2011, the festival has raised over $40,000 for Vernon Jubilee Hospital.
