A high-ranking RCMP officer was honored by Vernon city council for his level of service to the community at Monday’s council meeting.

Insp. Gord Stewart has worked for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP since 2014.

He will be transferring over to another province where he will be serving as assistant district officer, and superintendent in Leduc, Alta.

He began his career in 1988 in Charlottetown, PEI.

“Insp. Stewart has had many jobs over his career in the RCMP. Front-line duty, the general investigation section, and detachment commander,” Mayor Victor Cumming said. “His work ethic and good nature, and good sense of humour if you spent time with him will be missed in the Vernon Okanagan detachment, so we wish you well.”

Former Mayor Akbal Mund also expressed his gratitude.

“I appreciate everything that you have done for the community. I know people know your job is a difficult one and you did it with pride,” he said.

Stewart told council he enjoyed his time serving the city and that the Okanagan valley will always hold a special place in his heart.

“I think one of the highlights of my stay here has been the opportunity to work with various mayors and councils and city staff. It’s a very unique relationship between the city staff and the detachment and it’s a positive one. I think that we are all committed towards doing the best we can for the greater Vernon area.”

Stewart said he plans on visiting often and is eying the possibility of retiring in Vernon.

“It’s not an exaggeration to say the Okanagan is the best part of the country and Vernon is the best part of the Okanagan,” he said.
