It’s demo day for the Kin Race Track.
Construction crews were on hand Tuesday morning dismantling the remaining structures.
The track was established in 1893 and is dubbed by the Okanagan Equestrian Society as the oldest track in Canada.
Horse racing came to an end in 2014, partly because of a lengthy legal brawl that started in 2004 between the equestrian society, the City of Vernon and the RDNO.
Safety inspectors also said that the wiring at the grandstands was unsafe and required upgrading.
The society tried to win back the ability to host horse racing events at the site, but were struck down by a Supreme Court decision.
In January 2019, the society dropped their appeal of the Supreme Court decision, stating that they could no longer afford to fight the local government.
Since winning the legal battle, the City of Vernon has been considering options to repurpose the land.
The site could be the future location for an aquatic center, or other recreation facilities.
