Crowds show love for Canada

Jul 2, 2019 | 3:00 PM

Great weather and a great turnout highlighted Canada Day activities in Vernon.

Local Organizing Committee President Dave Frost said the daytime events at Polson Park went off without an issue.

“It went really well. We had great weather and a great turnout. We really enjoyed ourselves and had a lot of great feedback,” Frost told Vernon Matters.

Frost said the fireworks at Kin Beach was also well received, and started on schedule, despite some earlier wind issues.

“The weather cooperated. Leading up to it, it was getting a little gusty. We were a little concerned, but the wind died down and we put on a great fireworks show,” he said.

Frost felt it was one of the best fireworks shows they’ve ever run.

“In terms of quality, duration and how it was put together with the music and stuff. It was choreographed [with music on Beach Radio] really well.”

Frost said the crowds for the nation’s 152nd birthday bash appeared to be as big as previous years.

“It’s always a hard thing to gauge because there are so many entry points into Polson Park, but at times, it felt like it was up there as far as the attendance,” he said.

Frost wasn’t sure if the fireworks attracted as many viewers, given its 10:30 p.m. start on a night before many people had to return to work, but he said the mood was good.

“It was definitely a better mood overall. Behaviour-wise, everyone was out to enjoy the show. There wasn’t any undesired behaviours going on,” Frost said.
