Drivers urged to be aware of wildlife on roads

A local wildlife expert says this is the time of year when drivers have to be particularly careful watching for deer and other wildlife on roads.

Pete Wise of Wise Wildlife Control Services said three deer were hit and killed by vehicles on one day this week.

“The common thread is they’re all are being hit by vehicles — killed by vehicles. We picked up over 50 deer last year alone within the city limits of Vernon that had been struck and killed by vehicles.

“That’s a lot of deer, and a lot of damage to vehicles,” he said.

Wise said many of the incidents happen at dawn or dusk, and part of the problem is vehicles travelling too fast.

“Going too fast and not recognizing the danger when they see that. If you get a doe that is crossing the road in front of you, and if she has a fawn, the fawn is still in the ditch. And what happens is that fawn will chase after mama and she’ll run right in front of your vehicle. And it happens all the time,” he said.

Wise said a bear was hit and killed by a vehicle this week near Revelstoke.

He also advises people to leave baby deer alone if they see one on its own.

“If you see a deer in the grass, leave it alone, don’t touch it. It’s a natural process,” he said.

Wise added he’s also keeping busy with calls about snakes, racoons and marmots.

“Take your pick. There is a whole cornucopia of wildlife out there that is an issue right now.”
