Traffic backups come to end

There is good news for motorists heading into the Canada Day long weekend.

Work on 27th Street in Vernon that impacted the Highway 6 entrance and exit is now finished.

Traci Jeeves, president of Okanagan Traffic Control, said the project started May 1, taking almost two months and causing considerable traffic backups westbound on Highway 6.

“What we were doing was repairing all the base materials. Now that we’ve repaired the base, we’ll go and tear all of it up and make one, nice smooth surface, but we’re going to wait for the summer traffic season to end in September.”

The paving later this year is expected to take place at night.

Jeeves said they heard complaints about the work “everyday.”

“It was about the safety of the crew and the staff. It was because our lanes become so congested that we had to find another alternative to move traffic. And it really worked in our favour. We got our job done a lot faster than we expected,” Jeeves added.

She said the final part of the project will be repaving which will take place at night around September.

Jeeves said their next major project will cause more traffic issues when it starts in early July.

“It’s on 43rd Avenue from the highway to Alexis Park (Drive). That’s going to be another real problem,” she said.

The work starts at the highway near the Safeway at Vernon Square and extends to Alexis Drive.

Workers will try to leave two lanes open eastbound on 43rd Avenue and will try to keep traffic flowing in two directions at all times, but Jeeves admits there will be “nothing but trouble there.”
