Council supports downtown pot shop

Jun 25, 2019 | 12:00 PM

Another pot shop in the downtown core got the green light by council on Monday.

The proposed store would be situated at 3109 30th Ave.

Before coming to a vote, Coun. Scott Anderson mentioned the application had limited information.

“We have the usual problem in that we don’t know anything about it. I really like the way that we actually learned a lot the last time we said no. I think we should almost do that,” Anderson said.

But Coun. Kari Gares pointed out the owners of the business previously operated a cannabis store at the location from November 2017 to October 2018.

“We do have information on this one, it was a pre-existing cannabis shop,” she said.

Anderson later retracted his statements, and ended up supporting the application.

According to the staff report, the owners of the cannabis store decided to shut down in 2018 to comply with provincial legislation.

The application’s approval marks the sixth pot shop approved by council in the downtown BIA district.

In April, the city voted to cap downtown pot shops to six for one year, to study the impact.

The vote at Monday’s council meeting means that the six remaining shops seeking approval by council need to wait until more details emerge surrounding the provincial licence status of the other applications.
