Jun 20, 2019 | 7:32 PM

Children battling cancer now have a place closer to home to receive life-saving treatment.

Dozens of donors, doctors and supporters filled the McMurty-Baerg Cancer Centre at VJH to celebrate the grand opening of the pediatric oncology room.

“The whole purpose is to provide a better level of care. Cancer is really prevalent in our community and we wanted to make sure that the citizens of the Okanagan had high quality care,” Kevin Arbuckle, Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation President, said.

The facility comes equipped with toys, video games, and a beautiful mural painted by students at Vernon Christian School.

“As a parent, I can’t imagine what families experience when their child is diagnosed with cancer so it is comforting to know that a calming , therapeutic space is available to then,” Arbuckle added.

Funding for the space was made possible through the efforts of a local radiothon which raised $94,000 in 2018.
