Green candidate brings oil and business background to race

The local ballot is starting to fill up for the federal election this October.

The North Okanagan Shuswap riding now has four candidates, with the addition of Marc Reinarz of the Green Party.

The Spallumcheen resident is a former business manager who worked internationally before moving here to retire in 2004.

“The essential part of my resume is I worked in the Middle East for nine years and was in touch with oil companies there, and have good insight into what can be done and cannot be done with oil. And that’s what brings me to the Green Party,” Reinarz told Vernon Matters.

The Luxembourg native said he’s part of a growing number of business people getting involved with the party.

“In the past it was a grassroots party with a lot of protesting, but not having solid backgrounds and offering solutions — other than (party leader) Elizabeth May who is a very clever person — and some other people involved. But now you see on a larger scale there are people from the business environment who realize what is happening and get involved too,” Reinarz added.

The other local candidates so far are current first term MP Mel Arnold of the Conservatives, Cindy Derkaz of the Liberals and Kyle Delfing of the People’s Party.
