Local physiotherapist faces two charges

Police say a Vernon man who works as a physiotherapist, was charged with two counts of sexual assault, and they are trying to find out if there may be other alleged victims.

Stephen Witvoet, 47, was arrested Monday for alleged incidents between 2015 and 2016.

He was released on conditions, with another court date Thursday.

Police say Witvoet has been employed as a physiotherapist in Vernon for 14 years, beginning in 2005.

“We believe given the length of time he has been practicing, there may be potential victims who have not already reported to the police. We are asking those people to come forward now,” Const. Kelly Brett, the Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, said.

Witvoet works for Thrive Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic on 27th Street.

A person who answered the phone at the business, but did not want to give their name, told Vernon Matters they did not have any comment on the charges against Witvoet, or if he will still be practicing while the charges are before the courts.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP non-emergency line at 250-545-7171 and ask for Cpl. Canning-Lue of the Special Victims Unit. The number associated with the case is 2019-11058.
