Plays hard at both ends of ice

Vipers add North Van product to defence

The Vernon Vipers continue to restock their team for the 2019-20 BC Hockey League season.

Defenceman Ryan MacLean is the latest player to commit to the Vipers.

MacLean said his decision was based on the “highly professional-run Vipers spring camp” and to the “honesty and professionalism displayed by Coach Jason McKee.”

The six-foot, 175-pound native of North Vancouver played the last two years at the West Van Academy prep school.

During the 2018-19 season, he registered five goals and 21 assists in 34 games in the highly competitive CSSHL, which includes teams in Alberta and British Columbia.

MacLean describes himself as “a 200-foot player, playing hard at both ends of the ice.”

He said he prides himself on “a good first pass out of the zone” and his communication on the ice.

“I’m a talker which is something that Coach (Steve) Marr preaches,” he said. “He also stresses that we need to be highly competitive; there are no battles that you can’t win if you really stick your nose in there.”

Ryan MacLean also heaped praise on conditioning guru Ryan Kerr, with whom he’s currently working in the gym, along with the Vipers’ Josh Latta.

MacLean also looks forward to being involved with the community in Vernon.

“He has made a point of volunteering and being involved in community events and looks forward to meeting Viper fans and other members of the Vernon community,” according to the Vipers’ website.
