Canada Day fireworks to be held at usual location

Those hoping to take in the Canada Day fireworks at Polson Park, may be disappointed.

According to a staff report, city officials met with the North Okanagan Canada Day Society and determined that the fireworks at Polson Park would not meet federal regulations.

The report also says that there were concerns about the likelihood of a fire ban canceling the event, unless the fireworks were held on a barge on Okanagan Lake.

The North Okanagan Canada Day society approached council on March 25 to ask the city to consider the change in location.

The society argued that the fireworks at Polson Park would enhance the event because it would allow for larger entertainment like concerts.

“A lot of times people are setting up at each of the locations and there are people sort of gathering, and it is difficult to sort of enhance that,” said David Frost of the North Okanagan Canada Day Society during the March 25 council meeting.

He also said that the move would make the celebrations more cohesive.

“Having the show there, it saves a lot of time a lot of man power because we are not having to break down the show at 4 p.m., we can actually carry on, and if the weather is nice and people are enjoying themselves, people really don’t want to leave, and then having to usher people out, it gets a bit awkward,” he said.

This year, the fireworks are slated to take place on July 1 at 10:30 p.m. at Kin Beach.

Craftsman Collision is sponsoring the event for the fourth year in a row.

Beach Radio 107.5 will be playing the music for the show, which will be simulcast on the air as the fireworks go off.
