Group’s $500,000 Request Examined

Mar 9, 2017 | 7:00 PM

The Greater Vernon Advisory Committee will take a closer look at a request for funding from a local sports group.

The Vernon Pickleball Club is seeking $500,000 for new courts, which is also the amount the club plans to raise on its own through grants and donations.

GVAC director Doug Dirk says RDNO staff will prepare a report on the options.

“They will look at the process to take place, how it would happen, if it was to be money borrowed, assent from electors in terms of money, along with how much money,” Dirk tells Kiss FM.

The regional district has already made a commitment to provide the group with a site.

However, the proposed site for new pickleball courts could change.

GVAC Chair Juliette Cunningham says they made an earlier commitment to provide the club with a site in Marshall Fields — but that could change.

“For me there’s all kinds of possibilities. We don’t know what the result of the Kin Race Track negotiations are going to be. Perhaps that would be the better place,” Cunningham told the media.

Cunningham says they have had concerns about noise from some residents if the facility is at Marshall Fields.
