Six Fatal Crashes in BC

It was a deadly weekend on BC roads with six people dying in six separate incidents.

One was on the Trans Canada Highway west of Salmon Arm Sunday afternoon, where a Ford pickup crossed the centre line and hit Chevrolet pickup, killing the man driving the Ford.

“Alcohol has not been ruled out as a contributing factor to this collision. The occupants of the other vehicles involved suffered non-life-threatening injuries,” says Cpl. Mike Halskov, BC RCMP Traffic Services.

There was also fatal crashes in Chetwynd, Lytton, Squamish, North Vancouver, and near Prince George (see below for details).

The first weekend of December has proved deadly on British Columbia highways, resulting in a number of fatalities.

#1 On Thursday, November 29, 2018 Chetwynd RCMP attended a single vehicle fatal collision on Highway 29 near Jackfish Lake Road. Upon arrival it was determined that a Ford F150 pickup with two male occupants had left the highway. The driver of the pickup was ejected and was found deceased at the scene. Alcohol has not been ruled out as a causal factor of this collision. The passenger sustained minor injuries. Chetwynd RCMP is continuing to investigate and no further information is available at this time.

#2 On Friday, November 30, 2018 at approximately 10:25 AM a two-vehicle collision was reported on Highway 1 at Main Street in Lytton. The lone female driver of a Ford Fusion pulled out onto the highway in front of a pickup truck with a lone male driver. The woman driving the Fusion succumbed to her injuries in hospital. It appears driver error was the cause of this collision. The driver of the pickup truck sustained minor injuries. Central Interior Traffic Services (Ashcroft) is investigating and no further information is available at this time.

#3 On Saturday, December 1, 2018 at approximately 6:35 PM a three-vehicle collision occurred on Highway 1 at Mountain Highway in North Vancouver. It was reported that a westbound vehicle on Highway 1 veered into the oncoming lanes and collided with an eastbound pickup truck and another car that had been following. The lone male driver of the westbound vehicle died as a result of his injuries. The occupants of the other vehicles sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The cause of the collision remains under investigation. Port Mann Traffic Services is continuing to investigate and there is no further information available at this time.

#4 On December 2, 2018 at approximately 11:50 AM a multi-vehicle collision occurred on Highway 99 near Chance Creek Forest Service Road, approximately 30 kilometres north of Squamish. Upon arrival it was determined that a northbound Subaru with a lone female driver crossed the centre line and collided with two southbound vehicles. The driver of the Subaru was deceased at the scene and the occupants in the other vehicles received minor, non-life-threatening injuries. Road and weather conditions at the time were reported as “good.” The cause of this crash remains under investigation by Sea to Sky Traffic Services and no further information is available at this time.

#5 On Sunday, December 2, 2018 at approximately 4:10 PM a head-on collision occurred on Highway 1 approximately 15 kilometres west of Salmon Arm. Upon arrival it was determined that an eastbound Ford pickup truck crossed the centre line and collied head-on with a westbound Chevrolet pickup truck. Two other westbound vehicles were caught up in the collision. The lone male driver of the Ford pickup was deceased at the scene. Alcohol has not been ruled out as a contributing factor to this collision. The occupants of the other vehicles involved suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Trans Canada East Traffic Services (Golden) is investigating and no further information is available at this time.

#6 On December 3, 2018 at approximately 01:00 AM a head-on collision occurred on Highway 97 near Buckhorn Lake Road, about 10 kilometres south of Prince George. Upon arrival it was determined that a northbound Ford F150 with three occupants crossed the centre line and collided head-on with a southbound semi-truck. The driver of the pickup truck was deceased at the scene, while the remaining occupants and the driver of the semi-truck were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The cause of the crash is under investigation. North District Traffic Services (Prince George) is continuing to investigate and no further information is available at this time.
