Veteran crosswalk to be installed in Vernon

A crosswalk in Vernon will be painted to honour those who have served the nation.

City Councillor Teresa Durning put forward a motion at Monday’s meeting to install a Veteran’s crosswalk at the intersection of 31st Avenue and 30th Street.

The commemorative crosswalk would be located near Cenotaph Park and installed with a north-south orientation to reduce wear on the paint.

The costs of the installation would be covered by the Vernon Legion or other community organizations.

During the meeting, Councillor Akbal Mund said there were previously plans to have a Veteran’s crosswalk installed in Vernon but that was shut down by the federal government at the time, but Durning stated the Legion had since put policy in place that allowed them to paint commemorative crosswalks.

Vernon Council unanimously approved the installation of the Veteran’s crosswalk, and also agreed to recognize and acknowledge the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion Monday.
