37% With One Week To Go

Elections BC says, as of Friday morning, 1.2 million mail-in ballots had been returned for BC’s electoral reform referendum.

That works out to 37 percent of the total that were sent out.

The deadline for returning ballots was originally today, but that was extended to Dec. 7th due to strike action at Canada Post.

As of Friday, 49,701 ballots have been returned from the Vernon-Monashee riding, which is 34%, and 44, 015 in the Shuswap which is 35 percent.

Returns in the three Kelowna ridings range from 47,915 in Kelowna Mission (35%), to 49, 319 in Kelowna Lake Country (32%), and 49,918 in Kelowna West (32%).

The Vancouver Island riding of Parksville-Qualicum have sent in the most returns, at 46%, while the lowest returns are from the Surrey-Green Timbers riding, at 17%.

The referendum will decide if BC keeps the current first past the post voting system or changes to a system of proportional representation.
