Beach Radio News has messages in to Vernon RCMP, Department of National Defense,  and the City of Vernon for an update on the discovery of a military mortar in the Commonage area south of Vernon Friday.

We are still waiting for any of those agencies to respond.

The City has not issued an update on the closure of Commonage Road.

Update Nov. 23

The City of Vernon issued the following release about a temporary detour on Commnage Road:

Due to unplanned circumstances relating to construction on Mission Road, temporary detours are in effect on Commonage Road.

Mission Road will be detoured at 15th Avenue and closed at the DND Park entrance.

Commonage Road will be detoured at Bench Row Road and closed at Allan Brooks Way.

Large trucks are to use Highway 97 to access Vernon.

It is expected that the detour will be in effect until tomorrow.

Commonage Road south of Vernon has been closed after the discovery of what is believed to be an unexploded mortar.

RCMP Cst. Kelly Brett says the Department of National Defence will be responding to deactivate the device.

“The road remains closed for now,” Brett tells Beach Radio News.

The actual site isn’t known, but we’re told cars are being stopped near the Allan Brooks Nature Centre turnoff.

The mortar is likely a remnant of military training in that area years ago, and the devices do turn up from time to time.
