New Committee Formed To Review SD 22 Busing

Nov 22, 2018 | 1:30 PM

The new Vernon school board will take a new look at busing in the district.

Chair Robert Lee says trustees had a discussion about the issue at their meeting Wednesday, and agreed to form a new transportation committee.

“It will start with trustee Gen Acton, Lori Mindnich and Mark Olsen,” Lee tells Beach Radio News.

Lee says the committee will review what’s required according to the School Act, what is currently being provided by the District, and what changes could be made to address the needs of students.

“That is a work in progress, and we’re working towards a solution,”  says Lee.

The District implemented a $300 yearly per student charge for courtesy bus riders this fall, impacting students who live closer than 2.4 kilometres from their school, upsetting many parents.

“There has been concerns about that as well as other related concerns to transportation which is why we felt, as a board, that a committee was necessary to look over the whole transportation situation.”

Lee says public input will be part of the process.

“Once we have the committee formed, we’ll be looking for terms of references and other stakeholders to be involved with it as well.”
