Update: Referendum Deadline Extended

Update

The deadline for BC’s referendum on electoral reform has been extended by one week.

Elections BC says the voting period will now end at 4:30 on December 7th.

Chief electoral officer Anton Boegman says rotating strikes by postal workers have impacted accessibility, and the extra week will make sure voters are not impacted by that.

About 980,000 packages have been received by Elections BC as of today, which represents about 30% of those eligible.

Elections BC says they have received an estimated 900,000 packages for BC’s referendum on electoral reform as of today.

That represents 27% of the eligible voters.

The agency says it doesn’t include packages that have been received by Canada Post but not yet transferred to Elections BC.

The deadline to mail the ballots is Nov 30th.

About 83-hundred packages have been received from the Vernon Monashee riding, which is 16 percent, and 86-hundred from Shuswap which is 19 percent.

The referendum will determine if BC keeps the current first past the post voting system, or makes a change to a system of proportional representation.
