Kettle Campaign Launched

Kettle Campaign Launched

Nov 22, 2018 | 11:20 AM

Officials with Vernon’s Salvation Army say the need has never been greater as the annual Kettle campaign is launched.

The goal is to raise $500,000 over the next month, funds that will be used for the food bank and Salvation Army programs.

Lieutenant Stefan Reid says they are looking for volunteers to donate a minimum two hours to man the kettles.

“They are two hour shifts, indoors across the 11 kettle campaign locations, so just give two hours, that’s all we ask. If everyone in the community even donated $10, we would reach our goal of 500-thousand dollars,” Reid told Beach Radio’s Brian Martin and Jen Bailey who were on location at Save On Foods in the Village Green Centre, one of the kettle sites.

“(The funding) goes throughout the entire year and it helps our programs and the food bank so were able to pack our hampers. Last year alone at Christmas, there was $110,000 worth of product that went out through the doors of the Salvation Army,” adds Reid.

Reid says children are a very important part of their programs.

“We’ll see hundreds of kids come through our building at Christmas. We have our Christmas party next week where we’ll have a hundred to 150 kids and families come in and celebrate, and that’s why we do what we do, is for families and to support kids who may not have a meal in the morning,” says Reid.
