Property Crimes Tumble, Business B&E’s Jump

The latest crime numbers for Vernon are mostly positive.

Superintendent Shawna Baher told city council, criminal code offences were down 11 percent for the third quarter (July to September).

Property crimes were down 18 percent, and there were 40 fewer motor vehicle accidents over the three months, ending in September.

One negative was a big jump in commercial B and E’s in the city, which went from 18 to 58.

Baher (pictured) believes much of that can be tracked to one prolific offender.

She says the numbers spiked about the same time police were looking for a prolific offender in a stolen vehicle out of Kelowna.

“I attribute it a lot to a stolen vehicle we were looking for that was operating within our area as well as other areas. But as soon as that individual was arrested, and taken off the street, our B and E numbers immediately, for commercial break and enters, went lower,” Baher told Beach Radio News.

Baher joined the detachment July 23, coming to Vernon from the Surrey RCMP, and taking over for the retiring Jim McNamara.
