Recycling Options Under Discussion

Nov 13, 2018 | 11:00 AM

The Regional District of North Okanagan is still looking over options for its recycling program.

RDNO’s current contract runs out at the end of the year, and the operator says they don’t have the markets, with some plastic products now just going into landfills.

Director Hank Cameron says RDNO staff is working on finding other markets, but so far, no deals have been reached.

“The staff is already working on the concept of finding other customers, destinations for recycling material, but so far , we haven’t got a deal yet,” says Cameron, the Electoral E director for Cherryville.

Cameron says and programs like composting, and reduced packaging will also be pursued.

“The regional priorities are gong to be to reduced packaging, reduce manufacturing and  production of no-recyclables, to reduce the contamination of recycled material, and to compost any food waste, and this is gong to be over the next decade to manage our recycling and solid waste better,: Cameron told Beach Radio News.

One of the main issues is that China has stopped accepting foreign recycling.
