Extra Spaces For Homeless

Extra Spaces For Homeless

Oct 31, 2018 | 5:17 PM

With colder weather on the way, the BC government has announced funding to ensure a warm place for the homeless.

The province is providing more than 1,400 temporary shelter spaces and over 750 extreme weather spaces in 65 communities.

Kelly Fehr from the Turning Points Collaborative, says they will be opening a 40-bed bridge housing facility next to the Gateway Shelter.

“By that coming open, we’ll see that fill up, and that will create new spaces within our shelters,” says Fehr.

Fehr says that facility should open by mid November.

“Renovations are underway, so we’re aiming for Nov.15th, or as close to that as we can get.”

Fehr says the Gateway Shelter has kept its extra mats throughout the year, due to the demand.

“Those 13 mats will continue until the end of March.”
