Halloween Safety, Fireworks To Light Up Skies

Police are trying to make Halloween night a little less scary.

Cst. Kelly Brett says they will have extra officers on patrol tonight around the area.

“We do have enhanced patrols during the evening for any calls for service, but we do want to remind people to save 911 for emergencies only.”

She says they usually get a lot of calls about fireworks.

“There is a bylaw for the City of Vernon and anybody who is found setting off fireworks or firecrackers could be subject to a fine of up to ten thousand dollars.”

Brett says trick or treaters should make sure they are visible, and it’s never a bad idea for parents to check the candy they get.

“If kids are trick or treating in a neighborhood that they are not really familiar with the houses, it’s always good to check the treats. We also want to stay away from anything that is homemade looking.”

Fireworks will light up the skies at Kal Beach in Coldstream, by the BX- Swan Lake firehall, and in Lavington, all starting at 8 pm.

The Vernon SPCA is reminding residents to keep their pets secure inside homes, safe from any frightening sights and sounds.
